A CELEBRATION OF MONOGRAM - Louis Vuitton Heritage NEWS
The Icon And The Iconoclasts is a special project instigated by Louis Vuitton to celebrate the iconic Monogram.

Six renowned and creative iconoclasts, Frank Gehry, Rei Kawakubo, Karl Lagerfeld, Christian Louboutin, Marc Newson and Cindy Sherman, have each been given carte blanche to create a personally inspired bag and/or a piece of luggage, using the iconic Monogram while keeping with the brand’s spirit of innovation, collaboration and daring.

Spanning, blurring and redefining the disciplines of art, architecture and design, this diverse and extraordinary group has created a unique collection.

The project itself was initiated by Delphine Arnault, Executive Vice President of Louis Vuitton and Nicolas Ghesquière, Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director of Women’s Collections.

“When we talked with Nicolas Ghesquière about the extraordinary talents we would like to approach we simply went to those who are among the best in their fields,” says Delphine Arnault. “We were interested in people who work with their minds and their hands. I thought it was so interesting – and fun! – to have all of these different points of view on the Monogram. It is inspiring to see how they envision things, to see their perspectives. This is a group of geniuses.”

“Monogram is timeless, yet with this project we wanted to celebrate it in a way that defied the conventions of ‘classic’ says Michael Burke, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Louis Vuitton.

These very exclusive and limited editions will be available in selected Louis Vuitton stores worldwide from mid-October 2014. "The Icon and The Iconoclasts: The Celebration of Monogram" launch event will take place in New York City on November 7th, 2014.

  • MIND OF A VISIONARY

Share the views of five cutting-edge visionaries in fields as broad as literature, economics and politics interviewed at the 2014 World Economic Forum.

The World Economic Forum ‘s Annual meeting last January in Davos, Switzerland, gave Louis Vuitton the perfect setting to interview five business leaders of the international scene: Tom Reiss, Félix Marquardt, Atiq Rahimi, Gino Yu and Lourenço Bustani.

In these films, these entrepreneur travellers, chosen for their shared views and values in terms of excellence and innovation, discuss the notions of elegance, travelling and moving frontiers.

For Tom Reiss, elegance is “about remaining true to yourself first of all, (…) about keeping a connection to the past, keeping a connection to some kind of tradition. That’s very personal; it can be a very personal tradition (…) about finding meaning in what you wear just like there is meaning in what you do.”

Discover the House’s new window displays inspired directly from Gaston-Louis Vuitton’s original sketches and adapted here for the 21st century.

Gaston-Louis has been described as a visionary as well as an aesthete, a man of his time while turned towards the future. One of his diverse and multiple interests was the conception and creation of windows displays. In a time where store windows were reinvented every week, his passion combined with grasping the aesthetic of the twenties allowed him to imagine numerous displays from a graphic and geometric standpoint; a series of modern sceneries that still feel relevant today in 2014.

In 1925 he wrote an essay for the publication Vendre on this matter: “The art of creating a window display fall both within a sharp sense of architecture and the skills of a stage director”.
He finishes the piece on a more poetic note: “The picturesque streets of the older days with its curious boutiques are now gone forever. While the 19th century street was quite dull, a wind of change seems to be blowing in this new century: the shopkeeper transformed his front window into a magnificent and modern façade. Let’s turn the street into a cheerful space (…). By our daily renewed efforts let’s draw the passer-by, let’s give him a reason to dawdle, to stroll!”
