  • A DAMIER SIGNATURE, PART TWO

In 1889, at the Paris World Fair, the Damier canvas was born; a patented invention with for the first time, the inscription “L. Vuitton registered trademark”.

Almost a century after its creation in 1888, the Damier pattern was reintroduced by the Maison Louis Vuitton. Among the wide range of Damier canvases that have been introduced since then, the darker palette, subtle and elegant, has been one of the most appreciated.

More masculine and revisited in black and anthracite, the Damier has become undeniably urban. Damier Graphite is the first Louis Vuitton line solely dedicated to men. Adorned in smooth black leather and polished palladium hardware, the historic motif adopts an urban look that is stylish, streamlined, modern and cosmopolitan.

  • THE GAME PARADE

Graphic artist Honet takes us on a psychedelic journey with this second part of our focus on Louis Vuitton and games.

Games have always been popular at Louis Vuitton: Gaston-Louis made and collected board games, and jugglers were even exposed in store windows playing yo-yo in the 1930’s. The legendary chessboard, but also games of skills, cards, or dominos were edited with the colours and style of the Maison for specific occasions. Later in 2008, Louis Vuitton chose to open a new game-playing area by creating a line of Monogram cases and chests for poker, backgammon, dice, and even mahjong.

For this second interpretation of the Louis Vuitton game universe, French artist and illustrator Honet has created this graphic video, in one continual, spiralling thread. These graphic compositions feature the many board and table games Louis Vuitton once created, ranging from the pool table down to the classic chess board whose pattern recalls the iconic Damier print of 1888.

  • A DAMIER SIGNATURE

We are in 1889 and the eyes of the Paris World Fair have just witnessed the revealing of an icon. As old as the Eiffel Tower itself, we give you the Damier Canvas.

The design of Louis Vuitton’s Damier was the result of the creative spark that shined between Louis Vuitton and his son Georges Vuitton, who invented the canvas a year earlier in 1888.
Almost a century later, in 1998, the pattern was reintroduced as the Damier Ebène, and it has been one of the biggest successes of Louis Vuitton. A wide range of Damier canvases have been introduced since then: Damier Azur, Damier Graphite (for the 120th anniversary of the canvas), the embossed leather of Damier Infini or, more recently, the Damier Adventure and Damier Challenge.

One can be sure that with such a strong and recognizable pattern, the Maison Louis Vuitton will create new colourful interpretations in the future. But until then immerse yourself in the original Damier Canvas colours with this short stop-motion film introducing the latest Damier products.

  • RETRACING THE TRUNK

Embark on an imaginary visual journey through light projection and mapping techniques to celebrate the savoir-faire of the prestigious trunk maker.

Suited for explorers, archaeologists and adventurers, in the noblest sense of the term, Louis Vuitton’s trunks carry with them deeply engraved memories. Open an old trunk and a myriad of images escape, forgotten odours and anecdotes will resurface.

Hundreds of thousands of trunks have been handmade by Louis Vuitton since the 19th century. They all have their own history. They are scattered throughout the four corners of the globe. Some sleep in attics, others are in museums, others are still travelling. Trunks are like special possessions, carefully preserved or lost forever.

This short film by Les Courtisans immerses us in the visual history of Louis Vuitton trunks; jumping back and forth between the many designs developed by the house throughout the years; a graphic explosion at crossroads between the late 19th and early 21st century.

Each trunk tells its own story, a story told “through those who order them, those who owned them, and the times in which they were made, as if, once wide open, they are no longer trunks but albums” - Patrick-Louis Vuitton.
