Christian Boltanski is a leading figure in contemporary art, considered as France’s most influential living artist. Since 1967, he has developed an artistic practice that embraces writing, film, sculpture and photography, with a focus on remembrance and time, infused with biographical milestones and references. Memory and its corollary, an obsession with avoiding forgetfulness and oblivion, are central to his vision, as is the ability to invent legends and myths. Animitas is one of his most ambitious projects: creating outdoor installations in secluded places, using bells to echo the configuration of stars on the night of his birth: September 6, 1944.
As part of its ongoing “Hors-les-murs” programme, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is honoured to show the two last chapters of this series: Animitas (La forêt des murmures, 2016) shot in Teshima in Japan, and Animitas (Mères mortes, 2017) filmed by the Dead Sea in Israel. These two pieces, which form part of the Collection, echo, according to the artist himself, “the music of the stars and the voices of the floating souls”.
The Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, located at the 7th floor of the Louis Vuitton Omotesando store, is a glass box inviting to penetrate a paralel world. Its visually stimulating architecture and unique exhibition place encourages the presentation of major contemporary artworks.
