Classically trained as a painter, the famous German artist has maintained a lifelong fascination with the power of the image and painting's relationship with photography. His oeuvre, between figurative and abstract art, varies from photography-based portraits or landscape and still-life paintings, to gestural and monochrome abstractions, and color chart grid paintings where themes of chance, realism and abstraction are prominent. 4900 Colours (2007), which belongs to the Collection, is displayed in Seoul within the framework of the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s Hors-les-murs program.
Inaugurated in 2019, the Espace Louis Vuitton Seoul is nestled on the fourth floor of the Maison Louis Vuitton Seoul, the façade of which was designed by celebrated architect Frank Gehry. The glass structure that was inspired by the traditional Korean dance Dongnae Hakchum forms the shelter of a contemporary art space, echoing the Fondation Louis Vuitton building in Paris.
