These Master Craftsmen from Oaxaca de Juárez represent the artisans most skilled in Zapotec painting from the town of San Martín Tilcajete, México. The collaboration both celebrates the rich indigenous Zapotec culture and the town’s respect for handmade processes, heritage, and natural symbolism. During this exceptional event, clients will work directly with craftsmen from Taller Casa Don Juan’s workshop under Waldo Hernández, to create their personalized “power animal” art on Louis Vuitton hard-sided pieces. The twenty power animals in the Zapotec calendar include the chameleon, coyote, turtle, iguana, snake, armadillo, deer, rabbit, frog, dog, monkey, owl, opossum, jaguar, eagle, mockingbird, butterfly, snail, fish, and hummingbird, and are commonly featured in copal wood carvings known across the world as Oaxacan Alebrijes.
In keeping with fair-trade practices and out of respect for the art and its creators, the client and the Master Artisan have an open dialogue about the creation process. This project has been created under the highest parameters of respect and good practices in the Federal Copyright Laws and the Law for Safeguarding Knowledge, Identity, and Culture of Indigenous communities.
