Espace Louis Vuitton is an exhibition place encouraging creation of new contemporary artworks in Tokyo, München, Venezia, Beijing, Seoul and Osaka.
The Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo, inaugurated in 2011, is located at the center of Omotesando, the most beautiful area in Tokyo where many trends and cultural movements spring. Embodying Louis Vuitton’s and Japan’s shared passion for creativity, the Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo is a glass box on the top floor of the Louis Vuitton building designed by Japanese architect Jun Aoki. It is both a visually stimulating architecture and an exhibition place encouraging creation of new contemporary artworks.
The Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo is honored to present Plateaus (2014) by Rashid Johnson, exhibited for the first time in Japan. Echoing his culture and highly diverse influences, the American artist draws on both American history and African history, politics, and philosophy. This diversity is reflected in the wide range of materials he uses, including wax, wood, steel, copper, shea butter, ceramics, as well as found objects such as books, vinyl LPs, videotapes, plants and walkie-talkies. Johnson challenges cultural, personal and racial identity, mixing material and historical references. Still, his works are not necessarily demonstrative – they are to be seen as puzzles in which materials, figures and objects work to express emotional states.

Inaugurated in 2014, the Espace Louis Vuitton München contributes to the broader discourse of contemporary art by presenting new positions and curatorial encounters. It encourages the exchange between local and international artistic scenes, art professionals, collectors and the public audience.
From March 4th through August 14th, 2022, the Espace Louis Vuitton Munich presents “Two Burlesques”, an exhibition dedicated to British artist Ed Atkins, pursuing the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s mission of showcasing holdings from the Collection to an international audience through the “Hors-les-murs” programme.
British artist Ed Atkins defines himself as a visual artist, a writer, a poet, a screenwriter and a musician. The use of digital images and their impact on our daily experience are at the core of his video installations, featuring 3D characters that are “both ridiculously alive and completely dead.” Being the main character of his own videos, he gives performance a central role. In the framework of the Hors-les-murs programme of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Atkins specifically revisits the display of two of his works from the Collection: Us Dead Talk Love (2012), a meditation on love and death in the form of an autobiographical confession between two severed heads, to the sound of the musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street; and Even Pricks (2013) which shares a series of reflections on depression in an immersive, labyrinthine, yet jubilatory experience.

Since 2013, the Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia is where contemporary art meets the artistic heritage of La Serenissima. Putting traditional and modern art into context, it offers a means of breaking down barriers, of re-attaching contemporary art to its roots and celebrating the vitality of classical art, with the support Louis Vuitton brings each year to the restauration of famous Venitian art.
The Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia is pleased to announce the opening of its new exhibition, “Apollo, Apollo”, displaying a whole new installation by German artist Katharina Grosse. Specifically created for the space, in a black setting, it features a compositive image of the artist’s hands printed on a metallic mesh fabric, depicting a moment where the boundaries between the artist’s body and the colored material blur in the act of creating. The surface reflects visitors’ movements and contributes to the quintessentially Venetian mirror effect. “Apollo, Apollo” blends the transparent with the opaque, letting light filter through, creating a gateway to a dreamlike world in which visitors question their own perceptions of reality and illusion.
As Collateral Event of the 59th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, this presentation has been produced in the framework of the Fondation Louis Vuitton “Hors-les-murs” program, which unfolds at the Espaces Louis Vuitton in Tokyo, Munich, Venice, Beijing, Seoul and Osaka, realizing the Fondation’s commitment to mount international projects and make them accessible to a broader public.
From May this year, her work will be shown in La Couleur en fugue exhibition at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris; and this autumn, an original work commissioned by the Fondation in dialogue with Frank Gehry’s architecture will be installed on-site.

Inaugurated in 2017, the Espace Louis Vuitton Beijing is located in the Central Business District of the Chinese capital. Its 800m² exhibition space is dedicated exclusively to contemporary art exhibitions.
Cindy Sherman undergoes a metamorphosis for each of her portraits: a cinema star, a historical figure, a clown, or even a man. Questioning the cult of celebrity and the modes of self-representation with a characteristic offbeat sense of humour, she sacrifices her own appearance to expose the generally accepted tyranny of an ideal image. This exhibition, part of the Fondation Louis Vuitton “Hors-les-murs” programme, pays tribute to a career that spans over five decades, staking its claim in both the 20th and 21st centuries, from her first series to the most recent photo portraits and tapestry, never shown before in China.

Inaugurated in 2019, the Espace Louis Vuitton Seoul is nestled on the fourth floor of the Maison Louis Vuitton Seoul, the façade of which was designed by celebrated Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. A glass structure inspired by the traditional Korean dance Dongnae Hakchum forms the shelter of a contemporary art space, reflecting the sails of the Fondation Louis Vuitton building in Paris.
Andy Warhol, the Pygmalion of the contemporary world, was a master of staging. Creating characters for himself throughout his career, he touched the worlds of cinema, television and gay culture, propelling the figure of the artist to the rank of social icon. This selection of works from the Collection, presented here in the framework of the Fondation Louis Vuitton Hors-les-murs programme, ranges from his early photos to his very latest pieces and illustrates his hugely varied “self-reflections”, portraying the modern-day Narcissus. In his own words, “if you want to know about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There’s nothing behind it.”

The Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka welcomes contemporary art lovers at the fifth floor of the Maison Louis Vuitton Osaka Midosuji. Conceived by Japanese architect Jun Aoki, this emblematic building bears an remarkable façade inspired by a traditional Higaki-Kaisen cargo ship and its billowing sails, drawing on the city’s sea-faring history.
An iconic painter of our contemporary era, Gerhard Richter took on photography early in his career to question his craft, constantly revisiting his own oeuvre and the history of art. His first abstract works date back to the mid-1960s, mingling colourful grids and texture, action painting and monochromes with a rigourous structure. To this day, he continues to alternate them with figurative pieces, thus provoking, more than a simple parallel approach, a real mise en abyme. 18 of his abstract pieces from the Collection are presented here within the framework of the "Hors-les-murs" programme of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, paying tribute to more than 30 years of creation.
