Spanish artist Javier Mariscal is fond of California, whose clear blue skies and bright white light remind him of his native Valencia. On his fifth trip to Los Angeles, he remains curious and unaffected, spontaneously sketching figures, objects and landscapes in his notebook or on his iPad. What excites him most about LA, however, are the neon lights, slogans, shop signs, billboards and logos that swamp the city. He comes away with a wealth of astonishing typography, bringing his visual universe vibrantly to life.

Javier Mariscal is a graphic designer, illustrator, designer, filmmaker, painter, sculptor and ceramist - a total artist who revels in creative freedom. He published his first comic strips in the mid-1970s and gained a name for himself with the BAR CEL ONA logo he created in 1979, as well as his design for the Dúplex barstool, which led to his participation in the iconic exhibition by Ettore Sottsass and the Memphis group in Milan in 1981. One of his most celebrated designs is Cobi, the mascot of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. He has also designed covers for The New Yorker and film posters for Pedro Almodóvar and, with film director Fernando Trueba, created an animated feature film which was nominated for the Oscars in 2012.

The Louis Vuitton Travel Book collection is an invitation to real and virtual voyages. In its pages, the illustrations of renowned artists and promising young talents tell the stories of the cities and countries they have visited. The creative worlds on show are highly diverse: during their travels, these artists from various corners of the world were free to choose their mode of expression, from painting and illustration to collage and manga.
